Interactive Film Making

There are currently over 33,000 films trying to raise funds on Kickstarter alone which doesn’t include films raising money on other worthy platforms such as IndieGoGo and Seed and Spark, among others.
Facing an over-saturated market, when we were trying to decide if we should turn to crowdfunding to raise the seed money for our independent feature film "The Other Side," we knew we would have to make a big splash if we were going to have any chance at all of meeting our $50,000 goal.
Of course, this is in the post "Veronica Mars," Zach Braff, era, when celebrities from Spike Lee to Neil Young have drawn attention to the crowdfunding cause and changed the way people look at crowdfunding completely (depending on your train of thought this either good and bad).
We quickly understood that we would have to set ourselves apart using new ideas and turned to the innovative technology of interactive video to do so.  We had seen a few interactive videos (most notably the Bob Dylan music video and the New Girl music video) and our director, Dani Tenenbaum, thought this medium not only could fit extremely well for our story, but could be huge for people trying to raise money through crowdfunding in general.
Interactive video lets the viewer choose his or her own path of discovery.  For filmmakers, this means that it’s possible to invite people to explore different aspects of the film’s world and keep them engaged for longer than just a two-minute trailer.
Our film, which takes place between the Hasidic Jewish community in Brooklyn and the hipster community, which are two very distinct, vibrant, places, gave us the idea to film tours of each place and gives the viewer the chance to choose which tour they want to take.  We also have three languages in our film so we give people the option to hear a summary in English, Hebrew, or Yiddish depending on which language they speak.
Read More: Indiewire's Ultimate Guide to Crowdfunding
Interactive video is great for getting people involved in a deeper way because statistically people watch the video multiple times so they can see what would happen if they chose a different option.  People have watched our interactive video for an average of 7 minutes and 41 seconds, which in today’s fast paced, ADD world, is huge.  Now the viewer is invested in the project and is more likely to take the extra step of donating because they already spent more time getting to know not only the story, but also us as filmmakers.
Since the technology is brand new, certain kinks are still being worked out.  The interactivity works really well on computers (both laptops and desktops) but some phones and tablets struggle with loading this type of video.  However the team from Interlude, the company who created the interactive technology, are constantly updating their servers to give the best viewing experience possible and were super helpful as we were developing the video with great tips (they are also just really good people).
The end of the video takes you directly to our Kickstarter page where people can then choose to watch our regular pitch video or donate directly.  Being the first group of filmmakers to use this technology to crowdfund has been such an exciting and rewarding experience as we have had people from all over the world watching, sharing, and donating.
We can’t wait to see others develop their own interactive crowdfunding campaigns in the near future.
Check out the video below and read more about the campaign here.

RUBEN SALAZAR- THE DOCUMENTARY

Ruben Salazar: Man in the Middle examines the life and mysterious death of pioneering LA Times journalist Ruben Salazar.

At the heart of the story is Salazar's transformation from a mainstream, establishment reporter to primary chronicler and supporter of the radical Chicano movement of the late 1960s. Killed under mysterious circumstances by a law enforcement officer in 1970, Salazar became an instant martyr to Latinos — many of whom had criticized his reporting during his lifetime. Adding to the Salazar mystique is that the details of how he was killed have been obscured in the ensuing four decades since his death. Featuring material from recently released files obtained by the filmmaker, Ruben Salazar: Man in the Middle removes Salazar from the glare of myth and martyrdom and offers a clear-eyed look at a complex man and his times.

The Documentary will air Nationally on PBS Tuesday, April 28, 2014 at 9 pm.

'Cesar Chavez' Director: 'We Don't See Films About The Latino Experience ... It's Time For That To Happen'

By Naibe Reynoso

"Cesar Chavez," the biopic about the late Hispanic union leader that fought for fair wages for farm workers, has been gaining buzz leading up to its theatrical release on Friday.

The movie won the audience award at the trendy South by Southwest Festival in Austin this month. President Obama recently hosted a screening at the White House. There have been Facebook campaigns urging Latino moviegoers to go see the movie, and it received support from the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, which has more than 60 million members.

There have been many documentaries about Cesar Chavez, who co-founded the United Farm Workers in 1962, led a grape boycott and organized a 300-mile march in California from Delano to Sacramento. But it wasn't until now that Chavez' story finally became a bona fide Hollywood movie.

It was a passion project for Diego Luna, who directed and produced the film.

**Indie Scene**Review: Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 - A Sexually Explicit Film About Love

Nymphomaniac: Vol. I
The implicit trait of Lars von Trier’s brand of envelope-pushing work is the power of provocation, so much that now it’s not a matter of “if”, but of “how” will he continue to develop his radical oeuvre. Whether it’s in the form of an apocalyptic scenario in Melancholia, an imaginary microcosm of the human condition in Dogville, or a sacrilegious odyssey into darkness in Antichrist , the perversely brilliant and divisive Danish auteur has always shown a predilection for telling stories about the feminine empowerment in very sexualized manners. He graphically delves into the demonization of female sexuality through a mutilation sequence in one film, exposes Nicole Kidman as an object victimized by a crowd of depraved men, or flips the coin an turns Kirsten Dunst into a rapist bride while the world is ending.
Sex and the oppressive way in which it has been used against women is clearly a recurring theme in his work, so it is not a surprise that in his latest, and perhaps most ambitious project, he decided to explore it in greater and even more explicit terms. In Nymphomaniac: Vol. I Von Trier gives birth to his greatest heroine yet, one that embodies all the qualities of the previous ones and utilizes them as weapons to combat the romanticized idea of love. Serving as the protagonist’s origin story, this first part is supposed to set the tone for the more shocking and grotesque second installment. Played by Charlotte Gainsbourg as an adult and by Stacy Martin in her younger years, Joe is a sex addict, a woman who carries the shame of her actions but doesn’t justify them or explains them via childhood trauma. She owns her self-proclaimed despicable personality, and she is aware that the lack of a reasonable cause for her insatiable sexual cravings makes her condition all the more disconcerting for the outside world.
Beaten and unglamorously left lying on a dark alley, which can presumably be attributed to her condition, adult Joe is taken in by Good Samaritan Seligman, played by Stellan Skarsgård. Reluctant to share the reasons for her state at first, eventually Joe opens up to the tolerant and heavily philosophical man. She begins by clarifying she is aware of how terrible of a person she is, and then exposes the intricacies of her unorthodox lifestyle. The promiscuous storyteller goes on to speak of her first time with an unsentimental man named Jerome, played by the now infamous Shia LaBeouf. The unsatisfactory experience is nonetheless relevant to her development as a chronic pleasure seeker.

Over tea, they discuss an analogy between fly-fishing and young Joe’s competition with her best friend to seduce as many men as possible on a moving train. The prize: a bag of colorful chocolates. Seligman listens to the blunt anecdotes without a hint of judgment. He attentively tries to make sense of her irrational behavior unconcerned with the morality of it, but with her motivations. With time, the actual intercourse becomes irrelevant, is the process, the psychological power trip, and the rejection towards intimacy that define Joe’s actions. She devices a form of systematic dating that uses a dice to determine how she will treat each one of her many partners. Objectifying them by denying them individuality is the key to her success. All of this serves to satisfy her need to be in control, and to prove that emotions are a sign of weakness. But of course, her motto: “love is lust with jealousy added”, changes when she realizes that the exact feeling she despises is the only thing that makes carnal relationships meaningful.
Hugo Speer, Uma Thurman, and Stacy Martin in "Nymphomaniac Vol.1"
Surprisingly comedic and never dull, this volume offers plenty of outstanding performances including a fantastically amusing Uma Thurman in a small but memorable role. Needless to say the work of Stacy Martin is outright fearless. Perennially flirtatious, yet vulnerable, she embodies the contradictions of her self-assured wickedness. Joe fights tenderness with indifference. Rarely seeing them as people, she disposes of her victims by creating illusions and encouraging their attachment, only to then shatter their hopes for believing she could be capable of monogamy. But clearly in all her rigorous endeavors to separate herself from anything that resembles affection, there is a visible emptiness. However, is not in her to simply give up the flesh for the soul, and as the preview clips from the second volume insinuate, she will try to fill that void with pain.

Von Trier’s storytelling is dynamic, poignant, and surprisingly accessible without leaving behind the thought provoking poetry that characterizes his work. As usual, his investigation on the human condition focuses on those dark corners that exist in a gray area between perversion and divinity. Sexuality itself is not important to him, but rather how the diversity of the sexual experiences of his characters shape them in the face of the outrageous circumstance she places them in. His vision champions female liberation and turns their sexual curiosity into an asset and not a demonized flaw. Even with all the attention placed on the pornographic nature of his images, this is, above all, a film about love. Not in a simplistic way at all, but one could argue that the Danish provocateur is the most feminist male filmmaker alive.

LOS ANGELES, March 20, 2014 - Pastor Rodriguez has seen the upcoming biopic CESAR CHAVEZ and shares his thoughts on the film, the icon, and why it is important we support this film at this moment in our nation's history.

"The movie is a long overdue tribute to a man who was willing to be a martyr for those who could not help themselves. I support this movie and encourage everyone to see it.   It will change hearts and minds."

"The film itself stood true to form in regards to capturing the organizing of farm workers in Delano, California, eventually leading to the United Farm Workers; which led to a National movement that brought about better working conditions and higher wages for the field workers, as well as, social change.  Chavez brought about this change through nonviolent civil disobedience, social activism, and hunger strikes."

Industry groups rally for film and TV tax-credit legislation

A coalition of entertainment industry groups, politicians and community members rallied Saturday to support legislation that would extend and expand California’s film and TV tax credit, which is due to expire in 2017.
Hundreds of people gathered at Independent Studio Services, a prop house in Sunland, to push for the recently proposed AB 1839 at the California Film & Television Production Alliance's Small Business Kick Off Rally.
The bill, written by Assemblymen Raul Bocanegra (D-Pacoima) and Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles), who were among the local politicians who spoke at the rally, seeks to extend California's film tax credit and expand its scope.
ON LOCATION: Where the cameras roll
Under a program enacted in 2009, California allocates $100 million annually to film and TV productions, which are eligible for up to a 25% tax credit toward qualified production expenses.
However, industry officials have been vocal about substantially increasing the annual funding to become more competitive with programs offered by states including New York, New Mexico, Louisiana and Georgia.
"It's no longer our birthright as Californians to expect the film industry is going to stay here," Independent Studio Services founder and event co-host Greg Bilson said to the crowd. "We have to have incentives that are going to make us competitive with other states."

CHECK OUT EVA LONGORIA'S DOCUMENTARY "FOOD CHAINS"

Actress and activist Eva Longoria Executive Produced Documentary "Food Chains" presented to buyers at Berlin's European Film Market:

THE DOCUMENTARY

There is more interest in food in the United States today than at any time in our history. Yet, there is very little interest in the hands that pick our food – the hundreds of thousands of people to whom we are all connected through our purchases at grocery stores, farmers' markets and restaurants.
Food Chains explores critical human rights issues in American agriculture from wage theft to modern-day slavery and exposes the powers that perpetuate these un-American violations of human dignity. The film stars dozens of farmworkers as well as Eva Longoria (Executive Producer), Dolores Huerta, Eric Schlosser, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Barry Estabrook, and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers.

Will 'Veronica Mars' Change the Movie Industry?

Veronica Mars is scheduled for release later this week both online and in theatres, and the film could forever change how studio executives and producers fund, distribute and release their films.
Might we be at an historic crossroads whereby the Dual-Distribution Movie method proves that the old studio-centric model of theatrical first is dead and gone? Might this be the movie industry's iPod moment when the music business was turned upside-down? Here's the lowdown on Veronica Mars movie:
  • Show creator and now movie producer/director, Rob Thomas, asked fans to contribute money via Kickstarter to produce the film, Veronica Mars.
  • The Kickstarter crowdfund raised over $5.7 million from over 91,000 contributors.
  • The tv series on which the film is based, went off the air about seven years ago.
  • Kristen Bell, star of Showtime's House of Lies, is the lead in Veronica Mars.
  • Warner Bros.'s Time Warner (TWX_)is distributing the film.
  • Veronica Mars premiered at SXSW on March 8.
  • Warner Bros. rented screens from AMC Entertainment (AMCX_) so they could carry out the dual release  --  releasing the film in both theatres and on demand via Amazon and iTunes on the release date.
  • In renting out the AMC screens, Warner Bros. will take in all the box office sales, replacing the usual way of theatres and studios splitting revenues from movie ticket sales.
  • Movie theatres commonly have a 90-day or 3-month release window to stay clear of on-demand release of the same film so as not to take away from the theatre's revenues.

Chris McKay Hired To Build Lego Movie Sequel

submit to reddit

Chris-McKay-Hired-To-Build-Lego-Movie-Sequel
While we can all thank writer directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord (plus co-writers Dan and Kevin Hagerman) for the fun of The Lego Movie, some of the credit definitely belongs to animation director and editor Chris McKay. Warner Bros. clearly believes he’s ready to step things up a level, and has put him in charge of the whole shebang for the sequel.
With the huge success of the first film ($361 million and counting so far worldwide), it was inevitable that the studio would want to kick off work on a follow-up, and already has Jared Stern and Michelle Morgan busy coming up with a script. With Lord and Miller overseeing as producers (and key members of Warners’ animation “brain trust” that aims to pool creative people and resources to make movies in a way similar to Pixar and Disney’s methods), McKay was the natural choice to take the big job for the new movie. He’s a veteran of shows such as Robot Chicken and Moral Orel, and has also worked as a writer, director or editor on several indie movies.
As for what the sequel will actually be about? That’s still up in the air, though we’d expect to see some continuation of Emmet (Chris Pratt) and co.’s adventures. Fingers crossed the new movie boasts the same level of mad inventiveness. However it turns out, Warners wants it American cinemas at least for May 26, 2017.
